Festa dei Ceri

The Festa dei Ceri is an important folkloristic event and is held on the eve of the anniversary of the death of the Patron Saint of the town, Ubaldo, on May 15. The Ceri are three colossal wooden structures that measure 4 meters high and weigh around 400 kg. each. Each candle is carried on the shoulders by the local men that run through the streets of the town and up the slope of Mt. Ingino, to the Church of St. Ubaldo. The celebration has become very popular and attracts tourists from all over the world.

On the top of each Candle or Cero, there is a small statue of a saint, each representing one of the three families of the Ceri. St. Ubaldo is yellow and is the patron saint of bricklayers, St. George, in blue, is the patron saint of storeowners and artisans, and St. Anthony Abbot, in black, is the patron saint to students and farmers.

The origins of the festival vary in different schools of thought. Some think that the tradition derives from an ancient Umbrian rite in honour of the god Cerere. Others believe that the festival derives from some historic fact dating around 1000 a.d.
