Crossbow Competition
Gubbio – last Sunday of May
This ancient competition of using emplaced medieval crossbows and shooting at a fixed target is always between Gubbio and its rival of San Sepolcro, a city located in Tuscany.
Information regarding this contest was found in documents dating from 1410.
The crossbowmen, or “balestrieri” are always clothed in antique medieval costume.
It is an event based on ability.
The winner is awarded a trophy, which is designed and made by an artist every year.
All those participating in the event are dressed in medieval garb.
The “sbanieratori” or flag throwers, show off their ability making the flags dance in air.
At the end of the event, there is a procession of dames and gentlemen in medieval costume throughout the streets of the city illuminated by torches.
